Wednesday, July 8, 2009 - Tax Deduction VS Tax Credit

Do you know the difference between a tax deduction and a tax credit?  In the case of the $8000 First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit, the difference is HUGE!  Here's a good explanation of the difference:  A tax deduction reduces the taxable income by the amount of the deduction.  For example, it you have $100,000 income and deduct the $8000, you would have a taxable income of $92,000.  If you were in a 25% tax bracket, you would get a $2,000 tax benefit (refund).  On the other hand, an $8.000 tax cre ...
